Backpacker magazine billed me for unwanted, unrequested subscription Boulder , Colorado

I received a bill, invoice, for a subscription to Backpacker Magazine which I did not request or otherwise subscribe to. While searching the internet for day hike locations in my area a window opened up saying something about subscribing to Backpacker Magazine or something to that effect. I closed that window and cleared cache and temporary internet files to delete any cookies or information related to it. Several days went by and then I received a bill from Backpacker Magazine for a new subscription, thanking me for subscribing, and saying a free gift was on it's way as well. The payment is to be mailed to Backpacker, P.O.Box 422481, Palm Coast, FL. 32142-2481 A search of their web site did not yield any mailing address or home office address to refute this subscription. A phone number is given, 1-800-666-3434 which I will try to call and cancel the subscription Monday, 4Arp11. They were able to get my name and home address from the internet some how without my having registered or otherwise filled out a subscription request online giving them my address.

Do you have an AMEX card? What I discovered was that, AMEX would constantly be sending me these sweepstakes mailings to which my response was "What do I have to lose?". What I didn't realize were the tiny checkboxes on the bottom back of the checks which said something to the effect of "No, please don't give me a free subscription to <Fill-in-generic-magazine-title-here>. Backpacker was one of those, another was Travel + Leisure, and a few others I don't recall. Never received any bills for these those, but I did succeed with a "one stop" solution of contacting the AMEX sweeps department and telling them to stop with the mailings or we would cancel our card.
