First let me say this report is not regarding me actually being ripped off, rather it is more of a complaint about some skewed, false advertising on Bookbyte.com. After all, they do say "Get Paid Cash. Get Paid Fast!" I don't consider waiting a week very "fast," especially for college students, seeing as I should have gone to a used book store and sold the books there and would have got money "fast." They also say, "For students that are looking for more, Bookbyte takes pride in being the best place to sell college textbooks back! Best of all, you will usually enjoy your money within one day of processing your textbook." How a person can "enjoy" receiving their money within "one day of processing your textbook" is impossible unless the check is received the next day, which would require overnight shipping of said check. Bookbyte does not offer such shipping methods for their checks, they ship first class mail (or priority mail), and takes 3-5 business days to arrive; therefore they are falsely advertising a delivery date of payment that is impossible, unless the person is using paypal. They do not distinguish between paypal and a check in this statement, so we must assume they are referring to all types of payments (paypal and checks), and can then conclude that they are in-fact advertising your check will arrive the next day, when this is simply impossible and not true. We go to the FAQ page and see this: "Once the shipment has reached our warehouse, it can take 3-5 business days to process your order. We normally issue payment within one business day of processing your shipment." A person won't see this at first, they must look for this statement by going to the "help page." The "enjoy your money within one day" is advertised on the main "selling" page, so most people will see that and assume they'll get their money much faster than they actually will. The problem I have is that I consider a day or two to process the shipment "fast," and then another day or two at max to receive payment. It should take no longer than a week to receive the money, and thats how long its taken me so far and it isn't even a busy time right now. One might say "its clear cut and dry, guy. they say it can take three to five days to process, maybe they skewed their advertising a little, but so what?! just deal with it." And I would respond with what their website says: "Please note that these are estimates only and cannot be guaranteed. During peak seasons, processing times may be longer." So, they don't actually have a definitive policy they must adhere to, they are only "estimates." Since they can't be "guaranteed," theoretically this company could hold your books indefinitely until you just let them keep the books, or sue them to try and get the books back, in which the company could just say "we don't have to give them back because they are still being processed and there are no guarantees as to how long this takes." Essentially, this company could scam people out of their books because there are "no guarantees" as they evidently state. Would they do that? Well I doubt they would be in business for long, but it is very concerning when any company says they can't guarantee you how long it will take for your items to be "valued." What they are essentially saying is "it could take 3-5 days to get your car fixed, but we can't guarantee you it won't take longer." Not having a stricter policy is my problem here, and if they take in a large volume of books they should hire more workers to decrease processing times, its not that difficult. They advertise payments being issued as "quick and fast," which is another problem I see. I don't consider a 3-5 day "processing" wait to be fast at all, that is actually quite ridiculous. 3 days should be the maximum, not the minimum. I sent them a few books and the package arrived on a saturday morning, the 9th of March. I give them the benefit of the doubt and assume they don't process orders on the weekend. I receive no emails from them until the following thursday, which states: "Great news! We received your shipment of order #******* on 3/12/2013 and our payment of $**.** is due to be sent to you by Check on 3/15/2013." This is false again, they didn't "receive" my shipment on the 12th which would be tuesday, they received it on the saturday morning. It might have taken them two days to process it, but to say they "received it" on a tuesday is simply false, although this could be a simple wording error. Then this statement says "due to be sent to you by check on 3/15/2013." This means I should have received the check on the 15th, I did not. Now comes the 16th, a Saturday, and I still did not receive the check I was waiting for. The bottom line here is they advertise "fast and quick" payment, yet when you search their website it contradicts this and says "3-5 days to process," with that only being a "non-guaranteeable estimate." I do not consider that to be quick at all as I've already said, and I did not see this until after I had shipped my items. Had this been more clear, and had the website not advertised "fast and quick" payment, I probably would have gone to my local book store and sold them there instead. And then to tell me my check should be here by friday and its not, and then not here the next day is very unprofessional of them. To top it off, I contact their "live chat help" and I am told they don't even have tracking for the checks they mail, meaning there is no way for me to even see when the check was actually mailed and when it will actually arrive. Its just silly and really disappointing as a customer.
