Abutment Plate Scam

I guess if I squeak long enough someone may listen.
In the area of dental implants, what is an abutment plate? I know what the abutment is and I know that if a jaw bone is insufficient, a metal plate is used to support the abutment, but what is an abutment plate?
It may just be a local scam here on the California Central Coast, but a couple of years ago I had an implant done then following the implant the dentist tells me that I will have to pay the dentist installing the crown $400 for an Abutment Plate. I did not question it until while sitting in the chair of the dentist getting ready to install the crown and another dentist/friend came in, donned a mask, and proceeded to look around in my mouth. As they were walking away talking, I overheard them talking about the abutment, but not the plate. When the dentist came back over to me I asked him about the abutment plate. He seemed surprised and then told me that the abutment was already in and that I did not need it and said nothing about a plate being needed. He then proceeded to install the crown without an Abutment Plate and it is still working today.
Last year I had another implant performed by a different set of dentists, except this time the abutment plate is to cost $625.00. If I am right, is a way for the dentist to get more money from the consumer to pay their referral fees and make a little extra.
