My parents have been patients with Dr. Stephen Aslami for more than 10 years. Over those years they have been very good customers and have received treatment from this doctor. My parents have insurance and over those 10 years that doctor has received at a minimum $100,000.00 in insurance payments. Whatever has been left owing by the insurance has been paid by my parents, until recently. My father is 76 and my mother 71. Both live solely on social security benefits. They have a very high monthly cost in medications, making it tough to pay the doctor or pay for food. Thank god for the church that help them with food. Over the last year they have been unable to pay a total of $150.00 that the insurance did not cover. They are unable to pay this amount, let all the rising costs we are all faced with. So, if you do the math my parents have been patients for more than 10 years and only owe $150.00, so basically the doctor wants to be paid his $15.00 per year that they owe. Never mind the huge insurance payments that have contributed to his wealth. Recently the doctor has given the law firm Olsen Shaner permission to take legal action. The bill is now over $400.00. Olsen Shaner is famous for strong arm tactics, they have been known to sell your personal non-exempt items to try to pay the debt in full. Accruing even more costs. Knowing my parents delicate state of health the Doctor has signed off on the debt for hard core collection efforts. He believes it is worth collecting every last penny his former patients has, even if it means coming into ones house and taking personal items to satisfy a debt and risking the stress that it will cause his for patients. That is if the non-exempt property is worth it. All for $150.00 over a 10year period, basically!!! You may argue that he may have more patients that owe him money as well. That may be true, but when an account is turned to collections that debt is written off as a loss. If money is collected he can claim it as income. It's a win-win for him and a horrible loss for senior citizen patients that have been stripped of their dignity.

This is abuse of power; and Mr Shaner one day will find himself face to face with all of this abuse of extorting money from people under the pretense of debt...I'm also a victim of Mr. Shaner ($200.00 have become more than a $1000.00 in a matter of days) despite the full payment of the original balance)...Threats against one's (my) personal property and of non-exempts items are Mr Shaner's motto in running his office and earning a living. Really, this has caused me great emotional distress and insomnia. I almost got into an accident after I had read his letter threatening to come into my home and seize it and all of my belongs to cover the debt. C'mon!! ; not one item, but all, and which will surpass the $200.00 ...This seems to me as a violation of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act ( I can't be sure as I'm not an attorney but I do feel violated in that regard). I understand some measures have to be taken for one to meet their requirements for a tendered service or any other unpaid debt; unfortunately, especially with this economy, it could be difficult to do so in a timely manner. I believe that for some people like me, not meeting the due date does not equal refusal of payment. .. The debt will be paid anyway. I wish that the Representatives or the Governor of the State of Utah will step in and investigate this matter and put a stop onto these illegal activities of abuse of power on its citizens. According to the 2010 Local Home Lending report, Utah always ranks the top 10 on the bankruptcy list; although it is primarily mortgage related. But, one can't help to think that such behaviors of abuse of power ( addition of unnecessary fees) are contributing factors of one's inability to pay their mortgage and or any other debts. For the ones with limited income it is worst, as every single penny is all sucked up onto these fees. Therefore creating a domino effect from credit scores, employment, and to the state's economy, etc..
Sorry to say that this type of behavior affects us all.

No one in this state is going to come to your aid. The Governor on down are all run by the special interest groups that pay them and they would never intentionally stop the gravy train. These so called "lawyers" are being given card blanche by the courts whom decide what is legal and what is not. Pay them anyway you can, they are bottom feeders and won't and don't stop until you are crushed and understand who is in charge. As for that doctor, thanks for the heads up, it will never give him a second thought.
