sending me notices that I owe money when I've never had dealings with them

It started when I got a letter a month ago saying I owed something like $150 of a total bill of $250. Of course it didn't say what the charges were for. I called Edison publishing up and told them I felt like this was a scam and to please take me off their list and hung up. A couple minutes later, a man calls me back and say, "Hey wait a minute, you can't just hang up!" He told me I owed them money for magazine subscriptions they say I had ordered back 9 months before. When I told them I had not been receiving them and more to the point, that I had never ordered them, he said that he had a recorded conversation with where I agreed to it. He gave me a credit card number that they had on file saying this was "the number I had given them" It did not match any of my cards. He said if he could locate the recorded conversation would I be willing to come up with some sort of agreement to pay what "I owed." I said "fine" since I knew that I never had this conversation. Hadn't heard from them since. Until today I get another latter from them saying that this time I owe over $800! My question is this: How exactly did they get my address? How can I get them to stop hassling me for money for a "service" I never purchased from them?
