Extreme Fitness Waiting for Verbal Contract to be Acknowledged Toronto, Ontario
2nd of Apr, 2011 by User268924
I have experienced an extremely frustrating week dealing with Extreme Fitness, Richmond & John location. My trouble began when I froze my year-long membership for the summer months, something that is written in my contract as a viable option. Though Extreme Fitness continued to charge me during the summer months I was not using the gym, they promised that once my contract was up I would get the five months from the summer back for free. When my membership finished in October, I was surprised to find myself billed in November. I went in to speak with the manager, Greg Andzel, concerning these charges. He agreed that I was not to be charged in November, and still required 5 months free of membership. He printed off a new contract that did not refund me for my November bill, but rather added 5 months free after November. My five free months would expire May 1st, at which point he told me, if I emailed him 14 days before May 1st, he would cancel my membership. He provided me with his email address for this purpose. The last thing we said to each other before I left was to email him 14 days before May 1st to cancel my membership, no questions asked, and that he was sorry for my inconvenience. He was a very pleasant person. I emailed him four weeks before May 1st to notify the gym of my cancellation. He is no longer a manager at that location, but forwarded my request along to the current manager, who, to my great surprise, told me he could not cancel my membership as I had signed up for another year with Extreme Fitness when I went to see Greg. Apparently the amendment on the back of my contract which allowed me my free five months did not negate a new contract. I continue to be greatly distressed that I believedt what Greg told me I was signing was not the case. We did not discuss membership renewal at all, only clearing up a mis-fortunate case from the summer and reinstating what was rightly my due. He clearly told me that if I contacted him 14 days before May 1st I could cancel, no questions asked. I immediately wrote it down in my calendar along with his email address. It has been nine days since I first contacted Greg to cancel my membership. My current Extreme Fitness location is waiting to hear back from him acknowledging his verbal agreement of the May 1st deadline, so that they can cancel my membership. Unless they hear back from him, they say they are 'unable to do anything'. I was told to wait until tomorrow when they should hear some news. I am hoping for the best.

My Experience at Extreme Fitness Pickering.

It all started in November when I received a number of free passes from an Extreme Fitness promo team telling me I could go try the gym at any time I want. I decided to take my friend who was also interested in joining a gym to Extreme Fitness Pickering.

They accepted our passes and let us come work out but as soon as we were done we were immediately thrown into a high pressure sales situation in the gym’s office. We both made it clear that we did not want to commit to anything right now and that we were just trying the facilities. After forty-five minutes of different sales people trying to convince we finally had enough and left.

A week later my friend gets a call from Extreme Fitness saying that they’ve picked his name out of a draw and he’s won 30 days free. A bit skeptical because he never entered a draw we decide to go back again any way to see what was really going on. This time we are met by the sales manager Jean Legris who again brought us to the office and began very high pressure sales tactics. He went on to explain that we can only redeem the free 30 days that we “won” by signing up for a year long membership. After explaining to him that both of us live outside Pickering and that it would not be ideal for us to join a gym there he insisted numerous times that we at least sign up try the first month and go from there.

What harm could signing up to try a gym really do? We both reluctantly signed up, putting both our names under my credit card. No payments were to be paid until after the first month of us trying out the facilities. That was the deal, everyone seemingly agreed to it.

Two weeks into our supposedly free month of trial we decided that the location just wasn’t working for us. I went to Jean and told him thanks for the trial but we won’t be continuing at this gym and to please take our names out of the system. Jean suddenly was too busy, telling me to e-mail him both our names and he will take us out of the system immediately.

Almost two months go by and I get my credit card statement in the mail, strangely enough I have two charges from Extreme Fitness Pickering. I e-mail Jean telling him and he replies shortly after saying that the problem is fixed and he has issued a refund already.

Another month passes and not only do I notice that I haven’t received a refund but I’ve also been charged twice for another month of use, another $105. A little frustrated at this point I contact Jean again by e-mail. Jean states he is looking into the problem and I should get both refunds shortly, he also says me and my friend are off the membership list and will not be billed anymore.

Still with some faith in Jean and Extreme Fitness’s honesty I sat on my hands and waited for the refund he supposedly sent. It never came. In fact I was hit again with two membership fees for another month, bringing the total to over $300 on my credit card.

At this point Jean had became conveniently too busy to answer my e-mails and my only option was to go to Visa and plead my case. After weeks of waiting I received credits to my account for the months Extreme Fitness billed. However to this day, almost six months later, Extreme Fitness Pickering is STILL charging my credit card. The headache persists as Visa continues to credit these rogue billings of my card.

From high pressure sales situations, to bogus contest prizes, to “free” trials, to hundreds of dollars on my credit card for no reason, and a manager who would rather take advantage of people showing interest than to sign up clients in an honest legit way, Extreme Fitness goes to the extreme in more than just fitness.

I got two free passes to extreme fitness with my girlfriend downtown toronto. We go to extreme fitness in Pickering because my girlfriend goes to Durham college in Oshawa
My girlfriend already has a gym for free at her school but we thought it would be fun to work out together. So when we sign up we explain that we will pay for the months we use the gym but when school is over we might move home to Barrie and will need to cancel. Extreme fitness agreed and we signed up. We loved the gym but once cancellation time came they gave us the run around making us get letters from our landlord stating that we moved and making us drive several times from Barrie to Pickering to speak in person. 5 months later the cancellation issues continue and phone calls and emails go unreturned. Credit cards keep getting billed and we are pleading to have this issue resolved. We have not used the gym for the last 5 months and have had close to a thousand dollars stolen from us by extreme fitness! We will never ever even for a second consider choosing extreme fitness as our gym and have let all family and friends know of how schemeful these people are who work for them.
