GoDaddy.com
godaddy.com, GoDaddy refused to release our domains to be moved to competetor Violated ICANN, Internet
5th of Aug, 2011 by User655305
We had 8 domain names with Godaddy 15 were about to expire 1 was going to expire in the next few days. So we chose to transfer this one domain to a competitor. All of our domains had wois privacy option which required us to take the domain to be transferred OFF privacy. We did that and waited for the transfer authorization e-mail from the NEW domain registrar. It never showed. So we contacted the new Registrar and asked why we had not received the e-mail and they told us that they had sent it to the "Admin contact" of our domain as is policy. When we reviewed the admin contact info we were shocked to see that for the past year (we assume) and presently was listed with a server in the Cayman Islands with a non existent do not reply e-mail. So of course we needed to update the contact administrator info or we can't transfer the domain nor receive the authorization e-mail. However unbenounced to us and without any notification or warning anywhere on GoDaddy site where you click the button to update admin contact info, you have agreed to be LOCKED for 60 days and thus making it impossible to transfer our domain. We found out when the new registrar received a REFUSAL notice from GoDaddy stating this. This can only be considered extortion or coercions under duress as we are forced to pay for a minimum year renewal with GoDaddy to prevent the domain from expiring. After contacting them by phone and speaking with the so called senior supervisor who refused to identify himself other than Ian F. he basically told us that we should have seen a popup when we attempted to click update to our admin function. We made it clear to him there was no such popup and we did not have pop up block on. He asked us to go through it as a test live and we did. Still their was NO popup yet he claimed he had one therefore one does exist. Clearly we stated there must be an issue with your script working with all browsers as we had FireFox. He refused to speak further on the issue and said there is nothing he can do and then hung up the phone. from that point we inspected all of the 5 out of 8 expiring domains and found the same bogus Cayman Island admin contact info making it again, impossible to transfer any of these domains without being forced into a 60 day lock and thus renewing with Godaddy against our wishes. We sent further proof of this along with screen shots and they still returned with an e-mail stating in short " nothing we can do" you should have been aware. We have since sent all of this evidence and screen shots to ICAN. In April of 2008 ICANN sent out an advisory specifically prohibiting the locking of domains due to simply updating admin contact info. We have since discovered consumer posts that claim exactly what we have here that GoDaddy has repeatedly done this with all domains that are set to expire making it impossible to be transferred before expiration thus forcing the customer owner of the domain to renew with GoDaddy. This is the ultimate in BLATENT extortion BE WARNED. We are waiting for ICANN's response in hopes that they will make GoDaddy accountable.
