I purchased my first 13.8 cu. ft. upright freezer model #HUF138PA in April 2008. It lasted 2 months till June 2008. $400 worth of food was ruined in 90+ degree summer heat. The temperature alarm switch also failed which would have sounded to let me know the freezer was down. Needless to say this switch was worthless.


I called the store where it was purchased and they had another in stock and said that mine could have been damaged duringshipping and they would replace it. Ok. Lost a whole freezer of food, but at least I got another freezer.


The second freezer lasted until June 2010 also ruining all contents of food again.Seriously! I called the customer service number several times and talked with five different reps who always said they would call me with a date for service. NOT! The last one said that although it was covered under the 5 year warranty and it was a "sealed system", I would be responsible for the cost of the service call ($70.00 plus mileage). But they would graciously cover the parts. I thought that was mighty generous.


I then wrote a letter dated September 21, 2010, to the CEO of Haier and sentby Priority Mail so that I would knowthat somebody had to sign for delivery with a copy to the New York Better Business Bureau. I requesteda refund of $326.66 and enclosed a copy of the receipt.


The BBB acknowledged my complaintby emailstarted mediation. In January 2011, I received my latest answer to the problem. Here is the quote from the letter:


Haier America offered a 1 time in-warranty service to the customer who declined and instead demanded a refund. Per Haier America's limited warranty,Haier America is responsible for providing the customer with a working unit for the duration of the warranty period. As no monetary transaction took place between the customer and Haier America, providing the customer with a working unit is the recourse that can be provided.


Do they really think I would want to risk another $400 worth of food torepair a substandard appliance? They have removed all these upright freezer models from their product list online.They are not even offered for sale anymore.What does that tell you?


There are lots of thesestories on pissedconsumer.com. Obviously, this is not an isolated incident.


I have no confidence in this product nor the company;consequently, I do not want another experience.Believe me, twice cleaning up thawed and bloody meat in the middle of 90+ degree heat is enough.Ithink the least that Haier could do is reimburse me for the freezer. I will just chalk up the cost of the food and the aggravation to experience and stick with products "made in America".
