I needed a calling card that my 14-year-old daughter could use while she was in Costa Rica. I wanted her to be able to call us in the U.S.A. My local grocery store had IDT calling cards for sale. Before I bought one, I called 800-533-4699 (the customer service number on the card) to find out if these cards would work in the U.S. The representative wanted the PIN number off the card. That was something that needed to be scratched off. Obviously, I wasn't going to scratch a number off a card that I wasn't sure I was buying. After several minutes of exchanging information off the card, she put me on hold for 10 minutes. When she came back, she said the card would work in Costa Rica but my daughter would have to call 900 80-9143 from Costa Rica to access the platform. The next day, I asked my husband to call IDT to make sure I had the right access number. They kept him on hold for 20 minutes and then said that the card WOULD NOT WORK IN COSTA RICA. They told him that no one had ever called them to ask that question and then hung up on him. I called the customer service number and asked the rep to give me the access number for Costa Rica. After being put on hold a few minutes, she came back and said that the card would not work in Costa Rica. I explained what had happened and gave her the 900 number I had been given. She told me I was lying and making up the entire story. Then she told me to have a nice day and hung up on me. I'm going back to the grocery store and making sure they remove all IDT calling cards from the store. I'm out the money, but I'll make sure IDT doesn't get another dime from the grocery store.

IDT is a total scam. I bought a few $5 calling cards to use to call a friend in Mexico. 20 minutes for only one call, totally wiped out my card. $1 fee up front, then a $3.50 assessment fee after. The total use of the card for me was .48cents out of the $5 that I paid. Customer service was a joke, the refused to pay back the fee. This company is a scam and should be under investigation. Never have I seen something like this.
