We booked Liberty movers for an interstate move from Manchester, CT Woodbury, MN

Pick up in Manchester was May 25, 2011.

The initial estimate was $1800.00 and required a $100 deposit. We were to pay $3.30 per cubic foot for our move. We did this by check. She asked me if there were stairs in the new apartment. I told her no, just an elevator. She said there would be no extra charge for that.

We spoke by phone to make arrangements. We indicated that we needed the Queen set and cafeteria tables dropped and a sofa picked up: to our sons home: Woodbury, MN about five minutes from our new apartment.

They said it would be a $100.00 charge for that.

On May 25, a crew of three men arrived in a truck with Liberty Moving written on the driver side door. As soon as they came in , the lead man, Ali, announced that this move is going to be much more than the quote. He had me sign the inventory sheets before they began loading the truck.

We agreed that we had many more boxes than thought and it was about 200 boxes.

We kept asking all day what the price was and he would not answer us. He told us the truck was a 24- foot truck. It seemed small for the move. He told us that a 10% tip was required for the move and that my husband should go to the bank again.

At the end of the day, he handed us a bill with a flat rate of $7500.00 written on the front of the inventory pages

I began to cry very hard. I told him that we had no idea that it would be that much money. Money, we dont have. My husband, battling breast cancer, was unemployed and I am on disability- social security. The truck was closed and locked. We gave them $1700 plus $200 tip, all the funds we had. The truck left and my husband and I were in shock.

We began our drive to Minnesota. We kept trying to call Liberty movers, but no one returned a call. A day or so later, (May 27)we got a call from Zack, the owner of Liberty Movers.

I tried to explain to him our shock and dismay and he kept saying we owed him all of this money. I asked him about the cubic footage and he said the truck was 26 feet not 24 feet.

He said to call him when we had the money, but our stuff was on the way to Minnesota.

We arrived at our sons home on Sat. May 28) Our research reflected an average 26 ft rental/moving truck held about 1600 cubic feet of goods. At $3.30 per cubic ft. we estimated that we owed Zack a total of $5, 280.00 for the move. He wanted $7500.

We called him again and asked about the cubic footage. He did not want to discuss this and said that the driver gave a flat rate of $7500. for the move and thats what we owed.

We reminded him that we were quoted cubic feet for this move. He had no answer for that.

We asked how much our shipment weighed and he refused to give us an answer on that as well.

Our belongings were scheduled to arrive June 5th, but, now Zack wanted $4000.00 sent electronically to his bank account. Or no delivery.

Finally, we sent him an electronic amount of $3000.00 with a balance of $1000.00 upon delivery.

A moving date of June 7th around 8am was scheduled.

At 2:00 p.m. a Budget Rental Truck pulled up. I thought they had the wrong house.

A man named Max(Quality Movers) got out and explained he had our belongings from Liberty Moving.

He further explained that he had met them on the highway to get our things.

He said, Your stuff was taken off of the truck in New Jersey, it was kept in a storage unit, then it was loaded on a truck and sent to meet me. These guys pulled up along side of me and just began throwing stuff into my rental truck. It was a mess. The boxes had all been wet and dried, so they were weak and everything was falling out of them.

I asked if he worked for Zack. He said, No, I am alone. I have hired two men to help me move your stuff today. I found them on Craigslist.

Then he told my son and I that it would be another $100.00 for the drop at his house and the drop at our house. Also, he would not move one thing until he checked out our apartment and how many steps he would have to take to get there. In the end he wanted another $375.00 for the move. We told him to call Zack because we had only the check for $1000.00 and all of this was included already.

Zack told him, no, they have to pay you separate.

In the end, we did pay Max because everything we owned was on the truck.

They unloaded the boxes but, the two men from Craigslist quit at that point and Max was left alone to move the furniture. The boxes, mostly water damaged were breaking as they were unloaded. Glass shattered everywhere, Bookcases water soaked and damaged fell apart in front of the movers.

Max managed to find a man to help him finish the move. He apologized for the moving nightmare and said he didnt know Zack at all. Zack still wants $560.00 more from us.

We are appalled and want justice for this. We believe this is a scam.
