I am helping someone close to me to file this report...My son and his friend have been unemployed and sometime homeless for at least a year now.they are just now starting to get on there feet. my son and his friend just got enough money together to get the down payment and first month to get a rent.My sons friend called MID(electric co.) to set up service she had previous service with them about 6 months prior.When she called she was told she had a previous bill of about 150 dollars and would also have to put a 200 deposit down to hook up service.She argued that she paid her bill in full,but come to find out MID did not turn off the service when she told them to so they added another month when she wasnt even living there.Knowing it would be futile to argue with them she agreed to pay for that month too.MID then told her it would take 3 to 5 days to hook up because they would have to investigate the hookup because the previous tenants to this apartment were running a meth lab and ran up a really high bill there and didnt pay.MID wanted a copy of the rental agreement and wanted her and my son to bring it in to there office with there IDs.My son and his friend (who is the one trying to hookup)did what they wanted a day goes by and MID contacts her to tell her unless she pays thousands of dollars they will not hook her up.They told her my son stole electricity from a previous address and they figured he owed them thousands...(which is not true but this is another story of MID abuse)My sons friend told them this is illegal for them to make her pay a bill that they claim he owes that she was the one paying in her name and should only have to pay hr bill.The man at MID said he would see what he could do. MID calls her the next day to tell her not only that they will not give her service at this address unless she pays her bill and what they want from my son, but now she is marked on her file that until both bills are paid they will refuse her electricity even if she is not renting with him.... they told her they can refuse service to anyone and for any reason they want.. this in my opinion is blackmail and also unfair collection practice...can someone please help we dont know what to do My son has a 5 year old and his friend is pregnant have no money to fight them but a lot of desire and energy to put them in there place not just for ourselves but for others they probably do this to...I have heard lots of horror stories with and about them
