My husband and I signed up for membership at Urban Active in Powell, Ohio in 2010. From the start, we were treated poorly. Everyone we encountered on the staff was condescending and we found it difficult to find even the most basic information, like class schedules. When I asked a personal trainer named Bill to show me how to use the machines, he told me to read the instructions on each machine. I replied that those instructions didn't give any info on how much weight to use or how many reps to do, let alone how to determine whether or not I was doing the exercises correctly or what level of pain was too much. First, he told me I should be able to determine that on my own (see what I mean by condescending?) and when I wouldn't accept that as an answer, rather than taking ten minutes out of his day to do his job, he told me come back for a demonstration class any Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. Sadly, I am not independently wealthy and spend my weekdays at work. Not that I asked, but I can only assume that my workplace wouldn't accept fitness machine demonstration as an excuse to call off. I have not been back to that facility for months but they won't let me out of my contract. They claim that with information such as my member number (that I have no recollection of ever receiving), they will cancel my month-to-month membership for a $10.00 fee. I have no way to access the "necessary" information and they won't release it to me. The Powell facility is not only not helping me cancel my membership but they appear to be going out of their way to impede my success and I have not been able to locate any corporate contact information. I honestly believe that the goal of this organization is to get as many paying members as possible, treat them badly so that they won't use the facility, and then refuse to stop charging them monthly membership dues. If someone were to look into it, I wonder if Urban Active would even be able to accommodate the number of paying members if everyone decided to show up for a workout. Does anyone know where I can find a hostage negotiator? I want my money back!
