Pawn Etc
Pawn Etc overcharged on redemption during grace period, rude, & no receipt Flowery Branch, Georgia
17th of Dec, 2010 by User460223
Let me summarize and then give you the story. Basically the owner ofPawn Etcovercharged me $43.50 when I redeemed my pawn. It was the 6th day of the 10 day grace period after 30 days in pawn. So, 36 days after doing a pawn I went to get my stuff out and was overcharged on redemption. The man was also irate rude and aggressive. To make matters worse he gave me no receipt making sure to cover his crooked deal.

On 11/09 I pawned a 73" HDTV and PS3 for $300 to fix my truck. I received the pawn ticket, thanked him and promised to return within 30 days to get it back out. I was informed that I had a 10 day grace period, which was also printed on the pawn ticket. Also on the ticket was printed that it would be $375 to redeem in 30 days or $412.50 to redeem within the 10 grace period after 30 days.

On 12/15, 6 days into the 10 day grace period, I returned to Pawn Etc. to redeem my ticket, which I misplaced. So I went in without a ticket and without remembering what the charge would be,thinking somewhere around $375. He informed me it would be $456 to redeem it. A little shocked I said it was more than I thought it would be and I'd have to return tomorrow and Ieven gave him a time I'd return.

The next day I finally found the ticket and looked at it again noting the $412.50. Was he trying to get over on me??? So I went back when I said I would with ticket in hand.

I walked in being friendly thinking maybe it was a misunderstanding and laid the ticket down asking in a calm tone if I could pay the $412.50 to redeem the ticket. He said no, it would be $456. I said "But it looks like I only owe you.." and before I could finish my sentence he threw up his hands and very aggressively and louder interrupted. "No! You listen to what I'm telling you! It's $456!". I said calmly, while his young employee watched from behind (maybe his son)"I can't believe you're getting irate with me. I'm trying to figure this out in a civilized manner. Now from how I read this..". And again he rudely and loudlyinterrupts "You read this!" pointing at the section. I said "Yes I did and it looks to me like I only owe you..". And yet again he aggressively interrupts. He goes on yelling and telling me that he should actually charge me more and will charge me moreif I continued to insist paying $412.50.

I'm no lawyer so I wasn't really sure. I said "Alright, I'll be right back." and left. I drove to another pawn store down the road, brought in the ticket, and asked the man (whom I know) to take a look and tell me what he thinks of all this. He informed me that if it was his ticket it would in fact be $412.50 by GA law.

Nowit was 10:30am and I had a very very important meeting at noonI could not miss in Atlanta and it would take all day. The scam was $43 and I was worried what he might do to my stuff if I waited till the next day. I thought of calling the police but seriously did not have the time. He had me in a sling and I was running out of time and options. I went to a few stores looking for a copy machine to copy the ticket, thinking he'd want it for sure. No copiers to be found and time was ticking. I figure I'd pay, get my stuff, then maybe do something tomorrow.

So I go in with $456 and paid it, of course he wanted the ticket. Giving him the money I saw him pull my ticket from the stack of others and mark it paid, but not with $456, just paid. Not wanting him to damage my stuff I remained calm and got the TV into the truck and strapped it down. I went back inside and asked for my receipt. He say's "You don't get a receipt. You have your property, that's your receipt." I'm already running late and had to leave. I wasn't interested in getting into a shouting match and I knew he'd probably call the law since he had my money now and I had no proof. I got ripped off.

The meeting in Atlanta went well, thank you. Thatevening Icalled and talked to the headof thePawn Brokers Assn of Georgia and explained what happened. I was told thatPawn Etcwasn't part of the association but I was correct about the $412.50 and I was overcharge illegally. In fact I was told that I should have called them and they would have went down there with me to support my claim and call the police if needed. We agreed that unfortunatelyI had no proof now but was glad I informed him about this person, which he knows of and will make sure to keep him in mind, and that I should call the Governor's office of consumer affairs to make a report, which I will Monday. I'll be looking for more sites like Ripoff Report to post this in as well. Frankly the $43 doesn't bother me as much as the fact that Pawn Etc probably does this to other people and probably often. I'm just hoping that if he has done this to others thatthey will also post here and we can do something about this thief. And if your reading this Pawn Etc, welcome to the information age.
