I am an owner of a condo here in Vancouver, BC Canada. Our building has gas fired fireplaces which are the responsibility of individual owners to maintain. Our strata corporation coordinates a locally licensed gas fitter to inspect and service fireplaces each calendar year.

For the second year in a row, I have received an unsolicited call from a firm advising that they are currently working in our building and have a list of 85% of the owners taking part in a gas fireplace inspection/service. The caller advises that because they are working in the building, they are able to give a large discount.

The caller is very careful not to disclose who they are or represent or how it is that they know the fireplace is due for an annual inspection. They lead one to assume that they are acting on behalf of the building.

I know for a fact that 85% if the owners of my condo building have not enrolled.

Only after repeated demands for identification does the caller identify the company involved and finally admit that they are not acting on behalf of the strata corporation.

I urge home owners to excercise caution. If you own in a condominium, you may wish to contact your strata agent or strata council.

My strata building has posted a notice advising all residents.
