Secure Data Recovery AKA California Data Services is scam artist organization that rips people off and spams the internet with over 200 different websites leading customers to believe that they are over 200 different companies that are local data recovery centers in hundreds of different cities and towns. The long list of websites listed below are securedatarecovery.com which is also californiadataservices and datarecoverybayarea. They will lead you to believe they are local but will ship your drive out to an undisclosed location without your knowledge. If you have a minor problem, they will tell you it is a major problem such as read/write heads costing nearly $2000. In situations where they know they can't recover good data they will often require a cashiers check (so a customer can't dispute charges) made out to World Acceptance Group and provide useless garbage data. This company also spams local business listings and creates fake 5 star reviews for each of their local listings. I'm not sure how they got the written testimonials on their website that are supposed to be from major corporations. My thinking is they are either fake, paid people to write the testimonials and if legitimate the customer just didn't care about the thousands of dollars the recovery cost since the company was paying and just happy to get the data.

Secure Data Recovery Services is a scam operation!
The hard drive failed in my laptop in May, and based on their internet ads, I contacted Secure Data Recovery Services. They told me to send the drive to their office in Indianapolis, so I sent it to them on May 31st, 2012. After over a week of not hearing from the company, I contacted them, and they told me they had not received my drive. However, I had a USPS tracking number that showed that the drive had indeed been delivered to them.
*Many* phone calls ensued before they finally located my drive. A company that is disorganized enough to misplace a hard drive is one that should be avoided. However, that wasn't the least of the problems I had with them: on June 27th they contacted me and told me that the problem was the read/write heads, and that it would cost over $1300 to recover the data from my drive (and they said this was a "discounted" price because they had inconvenienced me by misplacing my drive). My job involves extensive computer programming, and I knew that the problem could not be the read/write heads, based on the problems the drive was exhibiting just before it failed. I told SDRS this, and they again insisted the problem was failed read/write heads. I asked SDRS to return the drive to me, and I told them I felt they were misrepresenting the problem. They returned the drive some days later.
I then took the drive into the IT people at the university where I work. They simply put the drive into an external drive reader, and were able to recover the data with no trouble. This would not have been possible if the problem was the read/write heads, as SDRS had claimed.
SDRS clearly tried to scam me out of a lot of money, and they quite likely do this to other customers who are less computer savvy than I am; recovering data when read/write heads fail is much, much more expensive than simply reading the data off the drive using an external drive reader. The average consumer would have no means of determining if the company was truthfully diagnosing the problem with their drive.
This company's business practices are best described as sleazy. There needs to be better regulation of companies that do data recovery services. Checking their honesty is as easy as officials sending them a disk with a known simple-to-fix problem to see what they claim the problem is.
