This company claims on their website, under the "careers" heading that they do not necessarily require experience to work for them, just that it is helpful, and that you only really need a college degree. However, if you look at their advertised positions, this does not seem to be true. All of them ask for at least a certain number of years of experience. This company also failed to give me a chance at a certain position, which would make use of a certain drafting program, that I learned very well, when I was in school, just because I had never used it for any employers before (no experience that they would recognize). This is unfair, because companies with this mentality make it unduly difficult to get any job right out of school (even with an Engineering degree) because more and more companies only accept applicants with prior job experience (measured in years, not in internships). These things are unfair discrimination, even if the government does not recognize it as such, because if all employers only accept people with experience, then this is not fair to people trying to start their careers. We would need to get a job before we can have any experience, but we can't get a job if we don't have any experience! It's like you need to have something already before you can get any of it at all! This is almost as unfair as racism, or sexism, or other forms of bigotry, because if I can not be employed due to lack of experience, this keeps me from ever changing the fact that I don't have experience. I wouldn't be able to change this about myself any more than I could change my gender or ethnicity. In addition to this, many people, myself included, can learn very quickly, and can learn the essential functions of a job within a very reasonable time period, but this employer, and others like it, are still are not willing to give us a chance. Also, even people with experience would still need to get used to a new company, and it is still not an absolute guarantee that they would do any better than me. In conclusion, employers like this are the reason that people like me are sorely tempted just to live on handouts, even if I would much rather make something useful of my life and have a successful career. I am trying my best to live a meaningful and responsible life, but employers like this do not want to give me a chance to do just that.
