Poor explaination of sweepstakes entry fee/where did the money go?

On December 12th, I sent a check for $19.99 to enter a sweepstakes to win free merchandise, according to
the letter. I did not understand why they were asking for money, up front, in order to enter the sweepstakes.
Then, on January 3rd, I received a letter with an assortment of credit vouchers for $400 each, to apply towards
the purchase of some discounted merchandise. Here is what they wanted me to purchase:
1) RCA Surround Sound 5-CD home stereo system wth iPod dock
2) Quickshots HD Digital Camcorder Package
3) Dell Desktop Computer with New 18" HD LCD Monitor
4) Xavier Diamond Wristwatch
5) Famous Brand Laptop computer with Free internet
or 6) Freedom cookware and Cuisinart cookware set

I would not have sent the money, if I knew that it was a gimick to try to get me to buy more. I really don't want anything they are trying to sell me, at this time. This was a scam, as far as I am concerned.
