I discovered a charge-off/collection on my credit report listed as the Rickenbaker Group. I also had a corresponding credit score drop of nearly 100 points. The charge was for $1043.00 and I had never been contacted about this debt.

I immediately called the Rickenbaker Group. In true collection agency fashion, in severely broken English, their first response was to try to make arrangement for payment. I eventually chiseled a vehicle name out of them as "Reliant" and a license number. This was an unpaid towing/storage fee incurred Aug '09. I told them I have never owned a Reliant vehicle. They referred back to "when are you going to pay". I was able to get a towing company name from them in El Cajon, Ca.

A record check for that service showed a charge for a boat and Reliancebrand trailer. I sold the boat and trailer in Jan '09 and moved to another state a week later. The license plate was not the plate that I had on the trailer, indicating it had been re-registered. A parallel check with Ca. DMV said the boat and trailer no longer belonged to me. I attempted to call the current boat owner but never got an answer, a cell phone locator indicated that he had moved to Hawaii. He obviously didn't take the boat with him.

So, Rickenbacker came after me for another guy's tow charges. Since I contacted them, they saved my phone number and call 3 or 4 times a week. At one point they were willing to settle for about $400.00 if I would pay right away.

Rickenbaker needs to be put out of business, period. This has got to be the crookedest, most non-professional company I have ever dealt with.

I am having a similar experience with Jerry's Service and Occidental Towing for a truck we donated to the Salvation Army years ago. They are trying to get me to pay over $1000 for towing and storage service. It was so long ago that I can't even remember which year we made the donation. I am pretty sure it was before 2006 and most likely 2004. We have been to the DMV a total of three times and they can't give us the info without the Vin # - which we don't have... The Salvation army would have to spend days looking through their records because they don't record the donations by name, but by the vehicle. I am so sick of Jerry's ( who last year seemed to understand that this was wrong and this year turned it over to a collection agency in New York!) and Rapid Recovery Service in Buffalo NY I could scream.
