Uni-Body Collision Ltd Poor Work, Unreliable Timeframe's Mississauga, Ontario
4th of Oct, 2011 by User291135
So basically the story is I had an insurance claim to paint my rear quarter panel. The damage was caused by a touch less car wash that managed to chip paint off around the wheel well. I decided to go to Uni-Body to get it looked at and to get a quote. I have heard of Uni-body before through other members on here and from other's in the industry (I used to work at a mechanic shop). However, some of the things I heard weren't so positive, but I gave them the benefit of the doubt and gave them a chance. Sam (the owner), seemed very knowledgeable and helpful at the initial time I was there. He explained to me what would have to be done to look after it properly and assured me he will look after it properly. We worked out a deal for me to chip in a extra (cash) to get a few other things looked after while he's already painting to freshen the car up. So what we originally agreed upon was:
- paint the driver-rear quarter-panel and follow all the way to the A-pillar to make it seamless
- paint the roof as I saw a little bit of surface rust forming in the channels for the roof-racks
- roll both rear fenders
- paint the passenger-rear quarter-panel as it cracked from rolling The car was dropped of at Uni-Body Tue August 2 first thing in the morning. Here the rental-car guy picked me up to take me back to his place to get a car. Sam assured me the car would be done by Friday at noon as I was supposed to be leaving early monday morning to go on vacation. This is where the horror story begins…. I contacted Sam on a regular basis to check on the car's progress, it was inside sitting and being worked on he told me. Time flew by, and it was Friday before you knew it. However the car was not done, it was not even prepped!! Sam told me on FRIDAY that its too little time and he could not finish it. He said it would have to be Monday evening or Tuesday after-noon. I was not impressed at this point as I was supposed to start my vacation on the Monday, but I agreed as I had no choice and I didn't want the car rushed so it's done properly. On Saturday I had to turn-in my rental car as it's time was up as the insurance company was paying and the jobs time was taking longer then originally planned. I luckily had my mom's car available to use as they were up north already. Monday came along and I decided to pay a visit. Sam said it would not be done today (Monday) but it will be done tomorrow (Tuesday) at noon. The car was still not even prepped, they only have begun the sanding. The tech that was working on the car even said not to listen to Sam and that it won't be ready until Wednesday afternoon/evening. I was extremely frustrated at this point. Had I known this, I would have done this at least after my vacation or preferably at another shop. Tuesday afternoon the car FINALLY went into paint. Wednesday morning, the car was in to get its clear put on and to be baked. It took longer then a week to complete this job when it was supposed to take a few days. So I picked up the car wednesday afternoon and it was pouring, so I couldn't really see how it came out. Here is where it gets ugly….. I get home and stick the car in the garage to take a look at it. The colour matching looks awesome, dead on match. However, as I started to look in detail, i started to find problems one after another. They are:
- uneven finish on paint in certain areas that can be seen and felt
- orange-peeling in one section
- the passenger-side roof-rail channel was left un-touched they masked it right before the rust spots
- on the corner of the driver rear tail-light, there was rust starting to form and is evident that they simply painted over it (was not cleaned or sanded nor painted right in).
- passenger-rear quarter-panel was only painted a 1" width on the lip where it cracked, it was not blended around as I though it would be and it wasn't even done nicely
- ALMOST ALL the trim pieces has paint on them from a HORRIBLE masking job, by far the worst i've seen in the years i've been in the business
- and to top it off, my WHOLE car was white inside from the sanding dust. The trunk was filled with powder and muck from the wet-sanding. There even was a sanding pad left in the trunk!!!!! I call Sam back right away and start listing off the issues. He seemed surprised and in shock. He then told me to bring it back when I can to get it looked at and fixed. I brought it back a few days after my vacation and he see's all the issues and accepts them. He then tells me to bring the car in when I can as he would need a single day to fix it all up. A few weeks go by I give Uni-body a call to book my appointment to go in. Sam's son, Rich picks up and I explain my situation. he seemed in shock and disbelief that all this happens and told me to bring it by as they have an opening. I arrive and Rich takes a look at it and can't believe himself what he is seeing but tells me it will take a few days (not a single day like Sam said) to fix this as it all have to be painted again. I reluctantly agree as I have access to a car for the week so I can manage. When Im about to leave, Sam pulls in and wasn't impressed. He did not want to take care of it but Rich told me he would look after it. I receive a voice-mail today while in class from Sam stating the car is ready. Which to me is strange as I was told it would be a few days. So I was happy to pick it up and headed over right away. Rich was not it, but Sam was. When I got in, Sam handed me the keys and told me the paint on the trim was not from him and that the car was painted before, which is not true. I get home to take a closer look at the car and more surprises.
- The paint was only "touched-up" in the spots I had issues with, not blended, not cleaned up, JUST PAINTED OVER! I cans still see the rust spots!
- The pieces (tail-light & roof-rail trim) were not even removed to be touched up, I can see a bit of paint on them now!
- Where there was paint on the trim/seals, they removed MOST of it, but with that they removed PAINT FROM THE CAR where they painted that was good.
- My interior was dirty AGAIN from the polishing they did to fix the uneven paint. I don't know what to do anymore. This is a joke and a disaster. Clearly they don't care about the work they do nor about their clients. Don't let the pretty big building that they have fool you, as it doesn't mean anything. This is the passenger roof-rail cover, you can see in that they just painted over AND got it on my rail-covers

Rust spots forming on the rear-quarter panel lip, shows you the job wasn't done properly

You can still see the rust that was missed, shortcuts never win!
The paint was attempted to be removed off the trim/seals and you can see the paint they wrecked in doing that.
