Heartland Bank and Trust Company charges overdraft fees because of held check Bloomington, Illinois |

I've been a loyal customer of Heartland Bank and Trust since 2005. Over the course of banking there, I have not always been responsible with my check book as a young person just getting started in life. Needless to say, I've paid more than my fair share of overdraft fees due to this irresponsibility. I have ALWAYS had direct deposit and ALWAYS figured out a way to bring my account to a positive balance the same day of the overdraft. I completely agree with the bank having the right to charge a fee (to the amount of thier choosing) for a check that will not clear do to non-sufficient funds. Accordingly, I have rarely argued the fees unless there was a legitimate mistake. Over the past year or so I have noticed several things going on with Heartland Bank. First let me say customer service has gone out the window. Also, having been living on the edge of my finances all this time I have witnessed the bank hold checks until their deposit cut off time passes at 4pm, only to post them after that time to charge me fees. They rearrange my transactions-checks and debits, always largest to smallest so to charge me the greatest number of fees they can. Again, I figure if I am going to be irresponsible with my checkbook and debit card, if the bank wants to do this, they have that right since I'm not on top of my money. I do not agree with the practice but I understand it is not illegal. My most recent complaint is with Heartland Bank holding checks that have been deposited. Not only are they placing a 10 day hold on checks that are deposited to my account, they had NOT been informing me of this. When I checked my balance online, the statement would reflect the deposit had been credited to my account. Then I started noticing that my checks were being returned even though I showed a positive balance. I met with a banker today about this who refused to credit any of the 30+, $30 fees to my account. Again, I understand these practices are not illegal, but they are surely unethical. I have had deposits totaling around $3,400 disappear in the last month. Very few of my checks have been honored and I'm left penniless. Please stick with a credit union for all your banking needs as they are not profit driven. The demise of the great American economy lies with banks and their crooked practices and the US Government's lack of corporate/business regulation. Bless Heartland Bank's employees! I hope they are all able to find a more honest career before their lives end someday and they realize how many lives they destroyed. STAY AWAY FROM THIS BANK!!
