Northland Credit Control
Northland Credit Control Attempted to Collect 10 year old debt that was already paid off. Minneapolis, Minnesota
6th of Jul, 2011 by User706274
In January, I was informed by Northland Credit Control in a letter that I owed money to the University of Northern Iowa for a class that I had registered for and had forgotten to drop during the Fall 2010 semester. The catch is that I never even set foot in the class. I live 50 miles away, and was unemployed when I registered for the class. In the time between that and my receiving the letter, I had found a job and began working 40+ hours per week and was unable to attend the class. Back story aside, when I got this bill I was pretty shocked to say the least. The University did not once send me a physical bill for the tuition for that one class.....that I never set foot in. So they turned it over to Northland to handle, putting a ding on my credit report. Last Month I needed to send a transcript to another college in my town to begin the application process, which the request was denied by the University due to the financial hold on my student account. I was told there to give Northland a call, in which I came in contact with David Williams, a "bill collector". Before I was given a chance to explain the situation, he pulled up my account and began an attempt to collect a debt that was paid off directly to the University of Northern Iowa when I was a student there in the late 90s'-early 00's. Isn't this considered wire fraud??? So I spent the better part of 3 hours all together on the phone and on e-mail chasing down a person in the Student Accounts office to notify Northland that I no longer owe that debt. In the meantime a few days had lapsed, and Mr. Williams was supposed to contact someone there, but never did- nor seemed interested in doing so. So I took the matter into my own hands to clear myself of the old debt just so Mr. Williams and I could talk business about the current debt I owe them. Even after a supervisor at UNI advised him that it was paid off in 2002, he still attempted to collect on it, and refused to accept my payment on the current one. Nonetheless, I have decided to deal directly with an attorney and with UNI. If Northland continues to put the current and the former debt I intend to take them to court and sue for damages and also seek charges for fraud if possible.
