Pep Boys
Pep Boys Warranty Fraud Gastonia, North Carolina
17th of Mar, 2011 by User832030
This should have been simple. I bought a used motorcycle from Harley Davidson Charlotte. They prepped it for me and bought a new battery at Pep Boys (the bike is not a Harley). The battery stopped holding a charge shortly after I bought the bike, so I told the dealer. They gave me a copy of their Pep Boys receipt and apologized for the difficulty. After examining the battery and the receipt, there was no warranty info, so I called the PB store. They said "1 year". Then I called another store closer to my home (I have learned to double check any information given over the phone from PB) so I asked them too....."1 year". Put the battery in the car and drove down to the Gastonia, NC store. "3 months. Sorry, you are out of warranty." I asked the assistant manager, Pam, if she'd exchange it and make it good, considering even she was surprised it wasn't a year. Nope. Went to a motorcycle shop and bought a battery. Called 800-PEPBOYS and opened Case #67869. The store manager, Tiffany, called and offered to exchange it today, but I don't need two batteries, and they are not returnable. I asked for a refund. THAT's when I was told the receipt wasn't mine, it belonged to the Harley Dealer, and I wasn't entitled to any money as I didn't pay for the battery in the first place (Beleive me, I PAID!). So I said "OK, then refund Harley"......the full amount. She wouldn't guarantee that. She said she'd have to see what she could "work out" with them. Asked to speak to her boss. Kevin called me, told me she never should have offered to make it good as it was out of warranty, and furthermore, the warranty only extends to the purchaser. What?? So if my mechanic gets parts from Pep Boys and puts them on my car, they aren't under warranty? That's what he said, and furthermore went on to name Autozone as another example of a store with the same policy. ........ Pep Boys needs to be boycotted. In an economy where making it can depend on your customer service, Pep Boys managed to lose not just my business but a major HD Dealership's business over a battery that cost, after tax, $49.28.
