A#1 Air
A#1 Air A Number 1 Air After reading the ripoff complaints on A#1 Air I now realize I have also been ripped off by nearly $5,000. Carrollton, Texas

My experience is nearly identical to the others posted on A#1 Air. Downstairs air was out. I knew it had something to do with the compressor, but also knew the coil was bad and would need replacing soon, but that was not the immediate problem. I called A#1 without letting them know I may need a new system. I believe they sent a pair of sales guys out knowing my house was 12 years old (from readliy available market information) with builders grade equipment. They completed a series of tests to "prove" that my compressor was "grounded" and was killing the winding. They installed another winding and the same thing happened and was supposedly tripping the breaker (eventhough I had checked the breaker earlier and it was not tripped). They also took a look in the attic and said what a lousy job the original installers had done and reducting and code upgrades were required. Long story short, I was sold the following for just over $14,000: Amana 5-ton 16-SEER ASXC160601 (outside compressor) with AMV080905CX (evap/furnace) + plenum + reducting around unit in attic + unspecified "code upgrades" + 1 new return + all the service "benefits" that A#1 claims to offer. After I succumbed to the sales pitch and the installers had arrived the next morning I got another estimate on the parts and labor for $6,795. I promptly called my wife to have the workers stop all work while I called A#1 and asked to speak to the owner of the company. I was told she was out of town and I promptly received a return call from Chrissy and I explained that I believe I had been unfairly taken advantage of. She firmly held her ground, but sold me on some of the A#1 Air costs and benefits and also reduced the price to just under $13,000. I unfortunately allowed the work to proceed. The system works great and the work was excellent and professional. However, I firmly believe I have overpaid by about $5,000. I would appreciate any feedback from others who have experienced this or from other HVAC professionals who know the actual value of this product and service.

My two cents. Companies that charge less do so because they will feel less obligated to take care of you after the sale hence poor service 5 years down the road if your system has a hiccup. Companies that charge more take into account the liabilities of providing excellent customer service throughout the lifetime of a "customers" perception of those obligations. It seems to me you value better service and quality more than a cheaper system installed by less skilled professionals.
