Casa Conde was an untidy badly maintained home behind a high fence topped with razor wire. It is not at all close to the historic centre. The bedrooms are upstairs, the matresses and pillows are very thin, and there is no heating or heater even in mid winter. The unpleasant bathroom is shared, and one needed to go across the first floor foyer, which have ungated steep steps. The owner said that one needs a taxi to go places from the casa - a frightening thought in Mexico, as my daughter was held up at gunpoint by a taxi driver earlier in the year . The owners live elsewhere. I was all by myself, and, due to an outage, which the owner admitted happen regularly in the old house, there was no electricity, telephone connection, email or other way of communicating with the outside world. Cold, and fearing I might fall down the stairs looking for the bathroom at dark in the dark, I left before sunset, hailing a taxi in a near by street. As safe, livable accommodation was not provided, I asked for my large deposit back. The owner first promised a refund, but then refused, and said he would report me to the police on the charge that I took his keys. Why would i have taken them, and what use would they have been to me? Stumps me. Not a nice first day in Mexico.
