As an employee at a restaurant, my expectations were simple. I expected to be given an opportunity to sell a quality product, in an environment that met OSHA and health department guidelines, while being treated with respect. What happened was something completely different. Shortly after being hired, I was informed that the ventahood over the grill area was inoperable, and that the owner of the restaurant had no intent of repairing it. I discovered a serious roach infestation issue, and was also informed that the owner had no intention of hiring a pest control service to rectify that issue either. I learned shortly that the employees were yelled at and cussed at based on the whim of the management, and that discipline consisted of having hours cut at an extreme rate as they did not "fire anybody because Rudy doesn't have the money to pay unemployment." After working there a couple months, I was cussed out in the middle of a lunch rush by the owner for doing something the manager had told me to do. I never recieved an apology. The next day, I was cursed again for somethin I had not even done. When trying to mop the dining room floor, I was told that it was outside of my job description, and that I should not leave the cash register unattended. Keep in mind here that I was never told I was officially responsible for the register, and was never allowed to count the drawer to ensure the totals were what they were supposed to be. The last straw came when I had to call in sick a week after the cursing episodes. I was experience severe back pain and did not know why. After seeking medical treatment the following day at a local clinic out of my own pocket (the employer offers no kind of health care for the employees) I learned that working in an environment without an operating ventahood had triggered my previously manageable asthma. Going from being completely medication free, if I wanted to continue working in that environment, I would need to take 2 inhalers a day, along with a pill form medication. When I work to work the following day, my hours had been significantly cut, (from 6 shifts a week down to 3) and a note was left on the schedule that if we called in sick we had to have a Doctor's note. This not being an unreasonable, request, I went to my car and got the receipt from the doctor's office the previous day. When asked what the problem was, I told the manager the problem with the ventilation and how it was affecting my asthma. I finished my shift that day, preparing to work the next few days I had left on the schedule, and to begin seeking employment elsewhere anyway. The next day, the manager called and fired me in a voicemail. I have since applied for unemployment, I am not sure whether or not it will be approved, and I am seeking employment elsewhere in the meantime. I am writing this report to warn potential employees of the business practices of this organization. The inadequate ventilation, combined with the roach infestation, create obvious health risks for people who might be asthmatic. Also, the general treatment of the employees is insane enough that a person may feel as if they've been in a dysfunctional family by the time they leave. The general degrading treatment, combined with the unhealthy work environment, were enough to lead me to need to seek therapy after leaving there. It's just not a safe place.
