KOOL ALASKAN MALAMUTES, KOOL HUSKIES, KOOL SAMOYEDS, KOOL SIBERIAN HUSKIES, BUILT ON FOUNDATION OF LIES- PUPPY FARM Ionia County/ Lyons Michigan
6th of Mar, 2009 by User383986
I purchased a puppy from Pat Kool, of Kool Malamutes over a year ago. I initially sent in a deposit for TWO puppies ($300 deposit per puppy totaling $600 plus paypal fees November 13, 2007) on a Joy/Glacier puppy- BEFORE the two dogs were even bred. I was assured that I would have first and second pick of litter, and then I received this email a month later (I still had not received my receipt for my deposit):
I am going to copy and paste excerpts of the emails between myself and Kools: 12/13/07 Kools to Me: "Hi Lena, Sorry that I haven't sent your receipt yet. I will have it in the mail any day. I have been SO busy lately. I have a person that is interested in one of Joy's all white expected puppies. She asked me to ask each person with a deposit on Joy's litter if they were interested in all white puppies since I told her that we did not expect very many all white puppies from Joy. Are you interested in her all white puppies? Thanks!
Pat Kool" After stating on the phone that NO, I did NOT want to give up my spot.. I noticed the price had gone up from the $675-750 per puppy I was told it would be. I assumed it was for people that already didn't have deposits on a puppy. After a few weeks the price had grown considerably, and she wasn't returning my calls- so I sent her an email: 12/28/07 Me to Pat Kool:
"Hi Pat,
I noticed that you have raised the price of the puppies- is the amount you are now asking per puppy for people that do not have deposits on the litter?
When I spoke to you in the first week of November- you had told me they were going to be $675-750 per puppy, and so I sent a deposit for $600 on the premise that if I only chose one puppy instead of two, the entire amount of my deposit would go towards the purchase price of the puppy I did choose- then in the beginning of December, when you posted on your website that Joy and Glacier were having puppies they were listed as $750, and the price has slowly raised over the past few weeks to where it is now at $875 per puppy.
I called you a few times yesterday, and I understand you are extremely busy- but please get back to me when you can.. Thanks for everything. Lena" This was her response: "Hi Lena, As far as the prices on Joy's litter, our website has said $775-$875 for a long time. Since I was expecting most of them to be $875 now, I took off the $775 so as to not mislead anyone. The only litters that have been spoken of or posted as $675-$750 have been Peace's and New Name's since we would have a number of litters with theirs all ready to go at the same time and since they do not have any woolies. Maybe you misunderstood who the pricing for $675-$750 was for. You are welcome to take a lower priced one from Peace's or New Name's if you would like. Neither have woolies though. I will email again later.
Pat" This led to a number of arguments over the phone as the price of the puppies gradually rose until they were sold at $1,250 per puppy. Twice what I was first told. I was told my deposit is non-refundable, and if I have an issue I can forfeit my deposit, or choose a cheaper puppy from another litter. I ended up reluctantly choosing another puppy (one instead of two) because I didn't know any better at the time that Paypal would have refunded my money. I picked out my puppy, and after paying the balance (still no receipt), when she was old enough to come home, I was quoted one price for shipping $250- and then it was changed to a higher price over $300 and I had to drive two hours away to pick her up. Again if I didn't like it, I could pay a considerably higher amount $500 to have her shipped to the original airport I was quoted. I lived in the biggest city in the state, and the ONLY major city within several hours. There was no reason for this other than greed. When my puppy finally arrived, I hadn't seen a picture of her since she was about 5 weeks old. I had asked several times for an updated photo, and was told that they will be uploading them to the website later. Now I know why.. when she arrived she was in a kennel lined with newspaper. The newspaper was clean-not a spot on it.. yet my pup smelled like Hay and was just covered in feces and urine stains on her almost completely white coat. Earlier that morning I had called Pat, to verify the shipping info for the puppy and was told "Yeah, ummm.. we didn't give her a bath because the shipped puppies will sometimes get dirty in the crate if they go to the bathroom..so she uh.. might be a little dirty." A "little dirty" does not begin to describe the condition of my puppy. "Deplorable" might be a little more appropriate. Once we got her home, while I was bathing her in the tub, in addition to the smell-the BLACK water-two dead brown spiders, and five roly poly bugs fell out of her fur.
Please feel free to email me for a copy of the photo Pat Kool had posted on her website AFTER I had received my puppy. It shows a VERY unhappy, sick looking, unclean animal. I still tried to be more than accommodating to Pat, and went through an unbelievable amount of hardship trying to identify the parents of my puppy. She did not send the paperwork required by AKC to register the dog, and after several attempts to try to find a way to identify the parents I finally called AKC. I was told that not only do they not have a father listed by the supposed fathers name- but the litter my puppy was born in--was never registered. When I called Pat and asked about it- I was told they know the Fathers "true name", and "Oh yeah, well we breeders sometimes don't even register the litter until after the puppies are six months old." At first I tried being nice, and keeping some sort of cordial relationship with Pat, but after more arguments, and more calls to the AKC.. I was told by the AKC to take her to court as the AKC "can not register a puppy without papers, and can't force a breeder to register a litter." Months went by, and even though I checked with the AKC several more times, there was nothing they could do, and she still had not registered the litter. This past June, my beloved puppy died. Per her contract, I would be allowed to have a replacement puppy after I paid for shipping. After the aggravation and heartbreak of having a puppy die so young- I would NEVER get another dog from Pat Kool, nor any breeder affiliated with her Kennel for fear of again dealing with shady business practices, or receiving another puppy that would be sick, or die far before it's time. I had a hard time adjusting to the loss of my pup, and tried to just push the pain aside.. but months later I was still checking her site. Puppy after puppy was sold..and then I noticed a few things. The number of her dogs on the site grew considerably.. many of the dogs that I was told over a year ago were "waiting on OFA results in 1-2 weeks" still hadn't had their finding released. I remembered I asked her why she bred mixed breeds- I was told that they were her "sled dogs", when I finally had my pup home, I asked her about how to go about training her for Sledding.. I was told "Oh you know... we've never even had them in harnesses- we just got too busy breeding." I went to the OFA website and verified her dogs via the registration numbers on her website. Her male Silverstar, and her female Jodi (Mrs. Joe Cool) are full siblings, and yet were bred by Pat, and she kept a female puppy named Midnight Sun that she uses for breeding.
Here is link to OFA of Jodi's information. If you click on the names of the dogs it will bring you to other dogs she has registered. You might be surprised at what you find, since it shows siblings and parents of each REGISTERED dog, as long as they are OFA registered or pending (which still would show a pending status-especially after a year..) She also had insinuated on her site alaskanmalamutepups.com (before the website was revamped), that she will be breeding Cherokee to Glacier, ("she will have all white puppies much like Joy and Glacier's puppies") and she told me they are Father and Daughter. During the past few months I have joined several groups for Malamute owners (as I have two Mals now from a different breeder), and have come across many more people with heartbreaking tales of sick puppies, and horrific stories of her Kennel. Also, when I bought my puppy from Pat Kool- I lived in an apartment and was in transition to moving into a house. Not once did she ask me for references, a letter from my landlord/ or phone number verify that I was allowed to have a large dog in my apartment. And in response to the rebuttal posted on another complaint- Pat sent a form indicating the proper stake to tie out a dog-just in case I didn't have a fenced in yard. The paperwork from the Vet that Pat sent for my puppy does NOT match. The dates on the paperwork are from before she was born, names of other dogs are crossed off and "Gospel's puppies" is written instead. Dates are also adjusted. There is nothing to distinguish my puppy from any other dog brought in to the Vet, and when I called the Vet's Office- Even though they do have a record of her coming in for a health certificate to fly- they do NOT have records of ever taking a fecal exam, weight, or anything else other than one other visit for her first set of puppy shots. Why didn't I get those records? Instead I have records for other dogs-again with their names crossed out and "Gospel's Puppies" written next to it- with handwritten treatment dates for Giardia, Coccidia, and Round Worm. The Giardia Treatment supposedly ended two days before my puppy was given a Health Certificate to fly, but again- the Vet has no record of her treatments. The Animal Hospital they speak so highly of was non-cooperative in any way when I requested my puppies Vet records. In fact, "Jen" made it very clear that even though I was given fraudulent Vet records from their office- it was not their problem. Another thing I would like to bring to light, is that they did not move from Grand Rapids so that they had more room.. WRONG!!!!
