On January 23, 2011, me, my husband and brother walked into United Furniture in Clifton Heights. A young girl approached and asked if we needed any help. We said we were just looking. My husband really became interested in a double recliner with a cup holder and storage unit in the middle. I joined him on the other seat and agreed it was very comfortable and then walked around a bit more. My brother joined my husband on one of the couches and found that it too was comfortable at which time Mariam (the young sales person) came over to join us. I sat on the other recliner again. We asked a few questions such as color, and availability. Each question Mariam went to the back and came out to us until the question of cost. At this point a man came out from the back who I am assuming is the manager or owner. He has not given me his name still. The sticker price listed was $1799. Initially we were only going to purchase just the double recliner but my husband wanted the wedge and the other piece as well. The available colors were Sage (which was being shown and the man said he had available in the warehouse and would take 7-10 days to arrive when we are ready for delivery) and Cocoa (he would have to order because that was not in stock) I have always negotiated sticker prices of large purchases. I asked the man 'how much of a discount can I get for buying all three of the pieces, reclining sofa, reclining love seat and wedge I was quoted the price of $1599.00 of which we paid $1000.00 down. We received the reclining love seat on Monday, January 31, 2001. On Tuesday or Wednesday I had to call because the lever on one side was really tough to maneuver. They sent someone to look at it. A man arrived after several phone calls, he looked at the piece of furniture and said..'there is no problem. It just needs to be used a little. The cushion is probably to firm. Sunday, February 6, 2011, I went into the store to pay on my furniture when I noticed that the spot that my furniture was in had a piece missing and a "Sold sign" on the remaining pieces. The missing piece is the one in my living room. I confronted Mariam and 'the man from the first day of the sale' quickly came over. He interrupted my discussion with her regarding this sale. As I asked about the sale of the furniture being new at purchase he said that he told me that it was the display model and he told us that. Mariam's eyes widened and I know she could not respond as an employee or she would lose her job. My brother, husband and I all heard him say it would take 7 days for the "new units to get from the warehouse". I got another $100 off but my husband and I want the NEW furniture as promised at $1599.00. We were suppose to get someone out here to repair the lever still. I got a call today to set it up for February 23rd. I contacted United Furniture's main number on Chester Pike this morning at 10 am and spoke to the owner or manager who was going to the Cllifton heights store today to take care of this. Now, at about 3pm I called to ask again about the furniture. he agreed to swap out the furniture for the brand new furniture but will charge us $1799. I really feel like I was scammed. Promised new furniture at $1599.00 and sold display furniture. If I was to receive display furniture it should have been clearly marked and posted on the receipt! Neither of which has happened!
