Daniel Oppliger is a scam and scam
24th of Jun, 2012 by transitofvenus
I booked Daniel Oppliger's Tropical Sail's Corp's Transit of Venus trip to Maui Hawaii for June 5, 2011 at a cost of $769 for four nights at the Royal Lahaina Resort expecting to join a group of amateur astronomers and view the transit through telescopes provided by the tour and other members of the group. The trip was supposed to be billed through Tropical Sails for $769.
I called Dan repeatedly asking when he was going to bill me and he said he was going to get back to me. I also asked him how many people signed up for the trip and he waffled.
About a week before the trip he told that only two people signed up and that the other one was bringing a telescope. Then he told that it was only me. He made no effort to make arrangements for me to view the transit with a telescope making arrangements for me to go to an observatory or to join an astronomy club. I was left high and dry without any means to observe the transit for with I was going to travel six thousand miles to see.
More to the point, he told the resort to charge my Amex card in on March 6th for $921, not $769. I did not discover this until after I returned from the trip. I was told by Dan that the trip was paid for and I presumed that he paid for it and was going to bill me not realizing that he had the hotel bill me months earlier.
When I complained asking him to refund the $152.69 he replied that I was not his client but the resort's and told me not to contact him again. This is the kind of reply you would expect from a crook.
Dan Oppliger is a scam artist, scam artist and a fraud. He is a crook that you should not deal with. Furthermore, he runs tours that are scams. He should have told me months in advance that he did not have enough people for the trip so that I could have made arrangements to go on another tour group such as MWT where I would have been with a large group with telescopes.
BEWARE OF DAN OPPLIGER AND HIS TROPICAL SAILS TRAVEL AGENCY- THEY ARE scamS AND SCAMS.
The client was notified that we cancelled our group and was offered a package we had to Tahiti to view the Venus Transit that did run successfully.. He had plenty of advance warning and was holding a fully refundable airline ticket he purchased elsewhere. He had ample warning to make other arrangements as he states he paid the hotel in early March. We encouraged him to take the Tahiti package. He declined.
We made his initial reservation directly with the hotel as a courtesy for him. He cancelled that reservation and made changes to it including adding a night. The Royal Experience package is $199 per night for a minimum of 5 nights, plus 13.5% tax, & portage. He booked for four nights directly with the hotel.. HIs bill was correct.
We are not a scam artist or a crook and if fact did not profit from this booking, as he booked directly with the hotel. That makes him the hotels client, not ours. As a courtesy we supplied him with a pair of eclipse shades to view the Venus Transit.
