After joining a credit monitoring service I received a notice that a derogatory item had been placed on my credit. I am credit conscience and believe in paying my bills on time. I contacted the company to determine who they were. It was West Bay on behalf of Columbia House. After a lengthy discussion, it was determined that this was not my account and the inquiry was removed. Now again, about a year later, it is placed on my credit again this time for two accounts for the same amounts ($70 each). This again the ONLY derogatory item on my credit and I am in the process of applying for a mortgage. This time they have indicated that I made a payment, which I do know that if you make a payment on an old debt it re-ages the debt (allowing the beginning date for collections to be allowed to restart from that date now). Part of me wants to just pay the debt but than that is me admitting to something that is not my debt and it will stay on my credit for 7 years. I AM SO TIRED of the BIG companies trying to take advantage of us consumers. WE HAVE RIGHTS!!! At the present am disputing it once again with hopes that it will come off again and not interfere with my mortgage or I will be seeking an attorney at that point for sure!!!! How can a company just at will place something on your credit with no proof and I have to monitor this...to make sure that if its wrong, I have to dispute it. These companies should have to prove the debt before they place it on you credit and thereafter. Because usually it has already caused the damage, by significantly decreasing your FICO score.
