My Generac 16K failed at about 4 years old and 72 hrs. run time, consisting mostly of weekly 15 min. exercise cycles. Dealer determined it was the rotor that failed, not an uncommon problem with that model, and urged me to submit a warranty claim with Generac. Since the warranty had only covered the first two years of ownership, the only relief I could get from the manufacturer was the offer of a discounted price on the part, maybe their cost, at $585 and I'd be responsible for installation and earlier troubleshooting costs. I called a warranty claims rep at Generac to express disappointment with their offer, as the premature failure of the rotor was clearly due to either a design flaw or manufacturing flaw, and asked that they cover more of the repair cost, but got nowhere with that. I'm disappointed with my return on an investment of about $5,000 for the generator and installation just four years ago. Cynical as I am, I was shocked at Generac's lack of regard for my satisfaction with their product after it delivered substantially less than expected.
There are much better generators manufactured by more responsible companies. Don't waste your money on a Generac.

This has been a record setting year for power outages in Illinois. As a generator mechanic I have seen the above mentioned rotor failure at an alarming rate. Most often the generator is not the only equipment damaged. A voltage rise / spike before total gen failure often does considerable damage to mechanical equipment connected to the emergency power supply. The result: a dead generator, and a couple thousand dollars worth of interior repairs. My advice, don't by a Generac.
