Mediacom Intermittent Internet Service Columbia, Missouri

We've had Mediacom internet for about a year now. And for about a year now, the internet has gone out almost daily. Usually, it just takes us getting up, unplugging the power and the cable from the modem, waiting thirty seconds, and plugging it back in. That (usually) fixes it, at least until the next time it goes out that day.
We finally bought a new (better) modem, thinking the free one we got with internet service was the problem. That fixed the problem...until about mid-March of 2011. The internet went down for a scheduled update, and since then, our internet service has been so intermittent I honestly don't understand what we're paying for. As a college student who needs to use the internet on a regular basis for assignments (as in, I need this to be submitted by midnight and OOH looks like I'm going to have to go on campus at 11:45 pm because our Mediacom internet is STILL not working!) What's more, every time we call Mediacom, we're given the same run around of "troubleshooting" (i.e. unplug everything, plug it back in) and when they can't figure it out over the phone, they send someone out, who STILL can't figure it out, says that everything should be fine with our cable lines, and that the internet should be working. The technician leaves, and the next day, it's the same story. We live in an apartment complex where everyone has Mediacom, and we're the only ones with any kind of problem. They've told us all we can do to get reimbursed is to call them every time our internet goes down. Meaning Mediacom will be hearing from us several times a day from now on, probably to no avail. Unfortunately, in our area, there's no real alternative to Mediacom for internet. (We can't afford both phone service and internet and every other option requires phone service) Must be nice to have a monopoly and not have to actually provide good service.
