Public Storage
Public Storage, Salem Oregon Another innocent victim of the self-storage scams Salem, Oregon
27th of Aug, 2011 by User253591
I am another one who was standing in the "Trust in Humanity Line". Now I am in the "Idiot for Trusting Line".
For many years I was renting from Public Storage, paying my storage rent every month. I lived out of state so I was putting too much trust in the so called "security system" they have. Every now and then I would get a card in the mail saying my lock was missing and I would have to replace it. I knew I was a few days late but I had not started the process of them selling my stuff. I had not received a notice of a date of sale or anything like that.
Over the years I came close a few times but always paid before it got that far. But now that I look back, that card would come in the mail within a day or two of a late notice card. I paid them twice to replace a lock and another time I sent them a lock in the mail to put on my unit.
I think maybe they were cutting my lock off way too early, thinking they were going to sell my stuff and not putting their lock on my unit and then just leaving it sit there for all the vultures to feast on. What a great excuse for them to go through my unit and blame it on theft. I would think their policy would be to over-lock the unit with their lock and leave mine still on it until the day of sale or until I was current with my rent.
Anyway I finally went to my storage unit and opened up to see disaster. It had been gone through and all my boxes were opened and dumped and my expensive radial arm saw was gone. Everything that was of any value was gone. I discovered FIVE CUT LOCKS on the ground, INSIDE my unit.
While I was there the people right next door to mine were moving out and they had a cut lock on the inside of their unit. I had ask them if they were ever late in paying and they told me they had auto pay on theirs, so they were never late.
Pubic Storage supposedly has cameras at the gate, a gate code to get in, a gate code to get out, and on the main door of my building itself, a doorknob that needs a code to open and on my unit door itself it has a magnetic strip so it should register somewhere that my door is being opened. Amazingly through all of this security my unit lock was cut five times? I am thinking more of an inside conspiracy to open the units and get whatever they want and then blame it on burglary.
The manager was right there with me at my unit and there was absolutely no reaction at all. She just said she would make a report.
How many years have I been paying for a nearly empty storage unit? It makes me sick to think about all the money wasted. What do the managers do? They see a lock off the unit and just casually send me a card telling me my lock is gone? What is their position in taking some action when thing like that happen. I am a customer and they have my property on their property so I would think there would be some responsibility for them to do more. I want to contact a lawyer to see if I will be able to sue for at least some of the wasted rent and maybe some compensation for the stolen items. I am making it a priority to make this public.
I want to tell everyone, DO NO RENT FROM PUBLIC STORAGE!!!!!!! SPREAD THE WORD!!!!
