I was employed by Rent a Center, store 00693 in Kingman, AZ from October 16, 2009 through April 26, 2011, at which
time I was terminated by Victor????? (District Manager) for making a statement to a coworker, regarding a customer, which Victor overheard and didnt like. On the morning in question, Victor closed the office door and proceeded to tell me that You have an attitude and obviously didnt want to be here. This started the moment he came in the door. I came to work grouchy and got fired. No questions asked like: Is everything okay or Is there anything I can do to help? No, just (after a whole day of work), I dont like your attitude, give me your keys and leave. I was under the impression; this company was a caring and moral company. Funny, ?cause on the day I was fired
for being in a bad mood, my coach, who never asked me, about the fact that my home was broken into on Easter night,( which he was informed of by ????, Store Manager and why I called off for the first time in my employment with
Rent A Center). Now, I realize that it is just a game of cut throat as soon as someone is given a title and a bonus. Then, the only concern to them is keeping that bonus! Not the lives or worries of their coworkers. One week prior to April 26, 2011, I had spoken with the store manager, in regards to the hostile work environment. My concerns were as follows: The excessive work hours; being forced to stay at work (or be fired) until 9 pm on Saturdays (when scheduled off at 6:30pm) if credit numbers are not met. Being required to work on scheduled time off due to lack of staffing and Victors lack of participation in acquiring new staff; As well as, Rent A Centers Motto (or the lack thereof)
of, Improving the lives of its customers and coworkers. However, at every turn, we (as a store) were instructed to perform tasks that not only went against the motto but also against company policy! Such as, to give a customer, cash back
from the drawer to make them happy, due to them being upset over the company stated reinstatement fee! Most importantly, the daily (during the daily/semi-daily conference call or email) use of Threat Management! You cannot
honestly expect to get quality work from employees, when they live in fear of becoming unemployed. Threatening an employees livelihood does not improve their performance, lives or morale, but causes them to be afraid of becoming
unemployed and not focusing on the task at hand. Making them fear not being able to provide for their families, does not improve the quality of the work they do, it makes them focus on the what if? In many cases, we were threatened regarding not meeting the Daily Delivery Standards This is not an option
in the case of the district managers, having a member of upper management asking a store manager about how the Bonus structure works and them not having the answer. Best of all, having employees terrified of getting phone or
video shopped and failing. The company calls this a training aide, yet gives write-ups to anyone who fails. Whose life does that improve? During my time at Rent a Center, I actually believed that we were there every day, improving lives. I went to work
every day, no matter how I felt (sick, in pain, exhausted or even grieving over the death of my grandfather). I always gave 110% to my coworkers and customers, no exceptions. What did it get me? Fired! , on the other hand, was never there to see that and it just so happened to show up and caught me on a bad day I had worked 6 days a week and almost 12 hours a day since November 2010, doing not only my duties but also the duties of the
absent staff, plus being held accountable for all of it. Delivery standards, Returns, Corporate Accts., Customer gain and all the while being told its not good enough, even though 60%, or better, of the population of Kingman is unemployed. Myself, now included cannot afford to purchase merchandise from Rent a Center at four times the retail cost even if it is rent to own. Why? Because unemployment in Arizona has a cap of $240.00 a week( I know, just applied, even after making 35,000.00 last year) and people cannot afford to pay Rent a Center and their other bills (my rent alone is $425.00). Yet, we (employees) are being held accountable for standards (measured based on thousands of stores, worldwide not location stats.) I gave up, almost two years of extra non-scheduled time I could of spent with my family, never called in, never took time off, worked on my days off, for the most part, always on time of time(with the exception of sudden schedule changes), never even been in
trouble with the exception of getting written-up for failing a phone(training aide) shop, due to being busy and again short staffed and being unable to give my full focus to that part of my job and given nothing other than I dont like
your attitudegive me your keys and leave. I gave my life to Rent a Center, for what? To be told its not good enough and to get fired for having a bad
day. Thanks for the experiences and the knowledge I gained. I have learned a lot about myself and about Corporate
America greed. I have learned to only believe, half of what you hear and nothing you are told! But, to trust no one but myself and be sure to cover my a** no matter what! Ive learn that no matter who you work for, there will come a time when no matter how much Im told We are striving to improve the lives of our customers and coworkers, they really mean, Show me the money and the rest doesnt matter. In my opinion, (which doesnt mean much at this point) all coworkers and (recently ) former coworkers of should be personally interviewed (by someone outside ) regarding their experience as a Rent A Center employee and the treatment they and their fellow employees received from their District and Regional managers. I also firmly believe that ALL managers, District and above should be required to have (or obtain if currently holding that title) a degree in business\ management, as well as, psychology prior to for the mental and physical wellbeing
of the people they employ being giving that title level. Not just for their own knowledge of how to properly run a business (unlike some) but V%^&*(r and T$%^&sshould be evaluated as management and held to the exact same standards they hold their staff to (personal delivery quota and credit numbers). They need to get back to the basics and stop talking the talk and start walking the walk.This should be a standard by itself, all upper management should have hands on participation
in the day to day operation, instead of threatening the jobs of those who work under them!!!
