supermedia Tried to trick me into paying DFW Airport, Texas
31st of Aug, 2011 by User745867
They called my mom restaurant. They said they were "online yellow pages". This is the 3rd times. The first 2 times they called from different number. I told them the owner wasn't there but they can speak to me. They wanted to update our info in their database. I thought they are the Yellow Pages so I stayed on the line. The lady asked me basic questions like "Is your business still called ___" or "Is your address still ___." I said yes. She asked what my position was. I told her that I am server. She said there is no option for server, and asked me if it's ok to put me down as a supervisor. I reluctantly said, "ummm, I guess." She then told me that her supervisor needs to verify the call. She reminds me (3 times) to say that my position is supervisor. Her supervisor told me that he needs to ask me a few questions and it will be recorded for quality control purposes. He also reminded me to say that I am a supervisor if asked. At this point, I've decided that this is not a good idea. I asked him again that if he's with the Yellow Pages. He said he was with online yellow pages. His accent is not as thick as the lady, so I heard the "online" part. It occurred to me that this may be one of those companies that purposely pick a similar to a reputable company to trick people. So I said, "I am sorry for wasting your time, but I've decided not to continue. Can you please take my number off your calling list." He said that he can't do that but I can cancel. He asked me why don't I want to continue. I told him that I've heard of a few scams like this. He assured me that it wasn't a scam. So I said, "let me check your website first. Is it www.onlineyellowpages?" He went, "No, it's www.localsearch.com." (Both of them said they are "online yellow pages.") So I told him that I don't want to update anymore. He said that canceling will cost me $60. I told him that I am not canceling anything, I am just choosing not to update. He said that I only have 2 choices, either update or cancel. He asked me again if I want to cancel. I told him that I don't have the authority to do that. He asked me why did I waste his time. I told him that I was misled into thinking that it was a different company. We spent the next few mins going back and forth. he kept going "so I'm going to cancel your acc ok?" His voice sounded agitated. I feel like he was trying to trick me into accidentally saying ok/yes so they can bill me $60. I kept my voice normal and told him that I am not canceling. After a while, he gave up and told me that he's going to bill me anyway. I reminded him that I was not canceling anything. But he wouldn't listen and say that he's going to bill me. I was taken back by his stubbornness. The only thing I could say was, "Wow...good luck with that. He told me to go back to work and hung up.
